Troop 157 Late Breaking News

Check E-News for the latest troop news. If you are not receiving E-news, give Mr. Lee your e-mail address. We would like to have an e-mail address for every boy and adult who has one. We are only at about 60% of the troop right now.

Barn Raising Jamboree, 6/13:
If for some reason you are not going with the troop to Killington, Vermont on our 6/12-14 trip, you might want to head over to the Town Green on Saturday, June 13, to catch the big Barn Raising Jamboree. Read more about it in the flyer.

Camp Yawgoog, 8/15-22:
Ask anyone who went to Yawgoog last year, and you will leanr what a great time it was. The troop is going again, from Sunday 8/15 to Sunday 8/22. Mr. Sallay will be the adult leader for the full week, with Mr. Lee and others helping out for shorter periods of time. More detail can be found in a handout prepared by Mr. Sallay. You will need to have the official Boy Scout Health form filled out by your doctor.

Nobscot Cabin Improved:
Eight adults (Bob B., Wayne K., Rich L., Roger L., Harris L., John S., Gary W., Dick W.) and seven boys (Ben B., Mike B., Mike L., Mike Y., Watson S., Austin W., Jesse L.) spent Saturday, December 5, working on the troop's cabin at Nobscot. Major improvements were achieved. The details are in our memo faxed to the Council Executive, Dennis Prefontaine. Highlights: we replaced the back door, painted the door and window shutters a dark green (cabin looks great!), built two new benches, fixed up the kitchen area to make it functional, and added three new plexiglass panels in kitchen to brighten that room. Five boys and two adults stayed over Saturday night, and finished up some of the work on Sunday morning. An excellent meal was had by those staying over (roast beef and baked potatoes cooked in an aluminum foil coated box oven). Fun weekend.

October Hiking Plans Set - Riding Up, Walking Down, No Packs: We have settled on a destination and plan for our October 3-4 outing. We will meet promptly at the Scout House at 7 am on Saturday morning, October 3. We will drive to Franconia Notch, set up tents at Lafayette Campground in Franconia Notch, and then ride the Cannon Mountain Tram (100 passenger) to the top of Cannon Mountain. From there we will hike the ridge, with superb views, come down past beautiful Lonesome Lake (our destination on our hike two years ago), and then down to the campground. The hike will be without packs, or at most with day packs. It is about 5 miles. We will leave the campsite early on Sunday, so that we can be home by Noon. This should be a fun weekend, at the peak of fall color in the Whites, and it should still leave time for other activities (e.g, homework). Cost for the weekend will be $20 (covering food and the aerial tram). Attached is the Information and Permission Form for the trip.

Junior Leader Training, this Saturday: We have moved the location to the Scout House, as St. Julia's Church is fully occupied by a conference, and we have moved the time up to 9 am. All members of the PLC, plus the Assistant Patrol Leaders, should attend this important session (Mike B., Josh Z., Ben B., Alex W., Watson S., Brooks D., Colin H., Mike L., Bart M., and whomever the Assistant PLs are for the Wolverines and Donkeys). It's a lot of fun, and we'll have pizza after we're done! The training session will end at about 11:30 am, and the boys should be picked up at Noon.

Personal Management & Family Life Merit Badges: We are going to be working this fall on these two merit badges, both of which are required for Eagle. A handout on the badges was distributed at the beginning of the summer. The handout is available here:

Summer Assignment Cover Letter
Budget and Chores Worksheet 1 (Acrobat PDF)
Budget and Chores Worksheet 2 (Acrobat PDF)
Budget and Chores Worksheet 1 (Excel)
Budget and Chores Worksheet 2 (Excel)

The requirements for the two merit badges are available online at the Boy Scout Requirements Library. The worksheets are in both Excel and Acrobat PDF format. To view the PDF format files, you need a PDF reader, available free from Adobe.

Maine Trip a Success: Eight boys (and three adults, including one mom, Mrs. M.) returned to Warren Island. Tents were set up on Friday night. Mr. Lee arrived with our Kayak guide and the kayaks on Saturday morning. After some instruction, we set off on a three hour cruise around the surrounding islands. Back at Warren, we started a huge fire to heat rocks, then mounded seaweed over the rocks, in which we steamed lobsters, corn, and potatos (although a few lobster-shy scouts had Ramen). A game of Capture the Flag was played while the lobsters steamed. Weather was largely cloudy except late Saturday afternoon and evening. Beautiful starlight sky for the campfire after dinner. Quicksilver arrived at 10:30 am on Sunday to take us back to the mainland.

Open House at Tuesday's Meeting: Remember, this coming Tuesday's meeting is our annual Open House, for prospective new scouts. Our Patrol Leader's Council met last week, and has planned a camping skills program, including an interpatrol competition. We'll also see some slides from this summer and last year, and have refreshments.

Update on Maine Trip: Looks like somewhere between 8-10 boys will be going. Mr. Lee and Mr. Sallay are going, but we are in urgent need of a third adult with a large car (e.g., Suburban or van), as Mr. Lee will not be going up until Saturday morning. Bob Brody is calling everyone to find a volunteer. Give him a call if you can help. This number of boys and adults will work well, as we should all fit in the available kayaks, meaning that we can go out exploring for the full day.

Opening Meeting, Tuesday, September 8:  By popular demand, we are meeting on Tuesdays this year. Same time, 7:30pm. Same place, Scout House. Our first meeting of the year is this coming Tuesday, September 8. We will hold junior leader elections, and plan for our first trip, which is the following weekend, to Warren Island, Maine.

Maine Island Trip, September 11-13:  We're going to go back to midcoast Maine next weekend. Back to Warren Island. We'll be camping Friday and Saturday night, and kayaking on Saturday. Harvey Schiller will be bringing six 2-person kayaks with him this year, and we're hopeful that will allow us to spend more time on the water, and do some more exploring of the surrounding harbor and islands. Check out the Information & Permission Form for more details.

Open House, September 15:  We will be holding an open house for prospective new scouts at our regular meeting on Tuesday, September 15. The Open House will start at our regular starting time, 7:30 pm. If you know of boys who would be interested in joining our troop, ask them to come with their parents.
