Weston Boy Scout Troop 157

Nantucket Island Biking Trip

BSA Camp Richard, Nantucket Island, MA
June 6 - 8, 2003

We are heading to Nantucket Island this Friday to enjoy a weekend of biking, beaches, and seafood.  We’ll be ferrying over from Hyannis to land at BSA Camp Richard for 2 nights.  Sat, June 7 we’ll bike all over the island and hit some beaches and then find a local seafood shack for fish, chips, and maybe a burger.  Sunday, June 8, we’ll fix breakfast, break camp and meet the 12:00 ferry to return to Hyannis.  This is a great way and a great time of the year to visit Nantucket Island.  We should all be back in Weston by 4:30pm.  Boys can be dropped off at home, as necessary.  The following boys have signed on: Paul E, Zach M, Ben H, Matt H, Jake W, Andrew F, Nick H, Mike B, and adults: Mr Heath, Mr Bullister, and Mr Haradhvala.  Each scout must appear Friday afternoon with this permission slip signed by a parent and check or cash for $60*.

It is imperative that we get to the Steamship Authority dock in Hyannis before 6:00 pm to make the 6:15pm ferry.  Therefore we must meet at the Weston Scout House at 2:45pm and depart promptly.   Arrive at the scout house at 2:45pm with your packed duffel bag, bike, permission slip, and money.  Bring a snack with for the drive south and we’ll eat a simple supper on-board the ferry.  We will use a taxi to get all our gear to and from Camp Richard so no one will be carrying gear on their bikes.  We’ll arrive at Camp Richard around 9pm pitch tents in the dark (we’re getting quite experienced at that).  Use our backpacking list on our website for guidance (http://www.troop157.org/packlist.htm ) and temps should be about 50F at night.  Pack gear into a duffel bag so that nothing is loose and gets lost on the ferry.  Bring a tent if you have one; bring a headlamp and rear red light, and also bring a small daypack, or book pack for holding Sat lunch and snacks, 2 water bottles, and a rain jacket for our biking around the island.  We will be hitting some of the beaches so you might want to wear something that will tolerate a swim.  Don't forget sunscreen and bug repellent.

Total costs for this trip $60 / person* to cover parking, ferry fee, bike fee, camp fee, taxi fees, and Sat breakfast and lunch, and Sunday breakfast.  Additional spending money (approx $30) will be needed for Friday ferry supper, Sat supper, and Sun ferry lunch.
